Related to Port Pipavav’s core values is the idea that the success is interwoven with the fulfilment and well-being of its employees. One way this is accomplished is by establishing a work atmosphere that fosters and actively encourages innovation among employees.
There are a variety of ways in which employees are encouraged to contribute ideas and feedback regarding their work and port operations. These include meetings between team members and team leaders, surveys and strategy sessions to jointly review objectives. Each of these is designed to drive performance by building employees’ trust and emphasising the value of being an integral part of the Port Pipavav team.
Port Pipavav believes strongly that by recognising innovators in the workplace, team members will be inspired to think creatively and develop innovative and productive solutions. The port has an active Employee of the Month programme, as well as various other incentives that encourage creativity and participation.
One superb example of the impact of innovation at the port was the conversion and upgrade of the Gottwald mobile harbour crane from diesel to grid power. The crane was modified to run on electric power rather than on its own engine. This particular innovation resulted in considerable cost savings, reduced crane maintenance costs and greatly boosted operating efficiency.
