Port Pipavav is now connected to its hinterland via Surendranagar
by the broad gauge rail network of Indian Railways. The broad
guage rail connectivity project has been undertaken by Pipavav
Rail Corporation Limited(PRCL) promoted by Gujarat Pipavav
Port Limited and the Ministry of Railways. Port Pipavav has
developed three railway sidings inside the port limit in close
proximity to the warehouses and the berths for efficient and
speedy handling of cargo. One of the rail sidings is a dedicated
bulk siding.
The station code for the Gujarat Pipavav
Port Rail Siding is PPSP - 08424130 and it falls under the
Bhavnagar Division.
Port Pipavav is the first and only port in India to receive double stacked container trains, which have a capacity of carrying 180 TEUs as against 90 TEUs carried in a single stack train. Other advantages of running double stack container trains is that they result in lower rail freights, increase in the capacity of the railway line connecting the port as well as ensure faster evacuation of containers from the port as well as the ICD's.
